As May comes to a close, we proudly recognize Older Marylanders Month and celebrate the older adults whose wisdom, leadership, and contributions strengthen communities across our state every day. Governor Wes Moore’s proclamation honoring older Marylanders reminds us that creating communities where people of all ages can thrive together is essential to Maryland’s future.
That vision is taking shape in Allegany County through the Cambridge Residences + Commons initiative.
Live Together, Inc., a nonprofit developer of intergenerational demonstration projects and workforce development initiatives, has been working in Allegany County since 2023 to help reimagine community living across generations. Through a three-year Memorandum of Understanding with Frostburg State University, Live Together and community partners are exploring the revitalization of a vacant student housing building into a vibrant intergenerational mixed-income community.
The proposed Cambridge Residences + Commons will bring together older adults, families, students, and individuals of all ages in a shared environment centered on connection, wellness, and opportunity. The project includes:
• Interdisciplinary seminar and learning spaces
• Partnership with the FSU Social Work Program
• Residential assisted living grounded in person-directed living
• Workforce development and training opportunities in aging services
• Wellness and service coordination
• Access to campus dining, activities, and community life
Together, this model creates opportunities for engagement, socialization, and “natural neighboring” — proving that stronger communities are built when generations live and learn together.
